Years ago, Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks did spontaneous comic interviews at parties that became so popular they recorded some of them. In one, Reiner interviewed Brooks, who was supposed to be an astronaut. After a string of still-funny responses, Reiner finally told Brooks that he didn’t think he was equipped to be an astronaut. “What do you mean?” Brooks replied, “I’ve got boots and gloves and everything. I’ve got a heavy fur hat . . .”
The gadgets we’ve been talking about don’t, in and of themselves, certify anyone as organized, much less qualified, certainly, to be a manager. They may help you do that, but you have to figure on your own out what it is first. Then, you develop your own system – gadgeted up or not – to help you do it better.
You’ll receive plenty of advice regarding what it is to be a manager, of course. But having this book on your shelf or a certificate for that workshop on your wall will do you no more good that a heavy fur hat. You have to be the manager all by yourself – and you are going to have to accommodate yourself to the fact that you will have to learn what it is – for you, and in your industry and organization – all by yourself, as well.
